Great Commission Task Force Submitted by: Dr. Greg Hook
With the goal of finding ways Southern Baptists “can work more faithfully and effectively” together in fulfilling the Great Commission, messengers to the convention's annual meeting June 23-24 gave the green light to a task force to examine the denomination for one year and report back to the 2010 meeting in Orlando Fla.
Debate over the proposed Great Commission Task Force and an Internet document dubbed the “Great Commission Resurgence Declaration” had dominated pre-convention talk, with some Southern Baptist leaders backing it and others expressing concern. In the end, though, the 8,700-plus messengers at the annual meeting overwhelmingly supported the task force via a motion that gave Southern Baptist Convention President Johnny Hunt authority to appoint the panel -- something he did on the meeting's final day, naming 19 members.
In addition to Johnny Hunt the Great Commission Task Force includes:
Ronnie Floyd, pastor, Springdale, AR CHAIRMAN
Frank Page; First Baptist Church in Taylors, SC
R Albert Mohler, President, SBTS
Jim Richards, executive director, Southern Baptists of Texas
David Dockery, president, Union University;
Simon Tsoi, first vice chairman, International Mission Board;

Weekly Prayer Guide Submitted by: Church Office
Prayer for Ourselves: “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again” (John 12:28, NASB)
Thursday, December 17 – Beseech God to help us understand that if we do not maintain the holiness of His name before a watching world, He will maintain it at our expense. Seek God’s forgiveness for taking His name in vain and dishonoring it. Beg God to help us see how far this sin has estranged us from Him. Ask God to glorify His name in and through us. “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain” (Ex. 20:7, NASB).
Father, glorify Your name. Then a voice came out of heaven: ‘I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again’” (John 12:28, NASB)
Friday, December 18 – Seek knowledge of how jealous God is for His name. Beg forgiveness for robbing Him of His glory and ask Him to regenerate in us a great concern for the honor of His name. “But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned . . . I will vindicate the holiness of My great name . . . ” (Ezek. 36:21-23, NASB).
Saturday, December 19 – Cry out to the Lord for mercy and forgiveness for our profaning and misusing His holy name by our unbelief, disobedience, prayerlessness, and irreverence. Beg God to deal with us according to His mercy and give us understanding that we may know Him by name when we put our trust in Him. “And they who know Your name [who have experience and acquaintance with Your mercy] will lean on and confidently put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek (inquire of and for) You [on the authority of God's Word and the right of their necessity]” (Ps. 9:10, AMP).
Sunday, December 20 – Pray for God to help us comprehend that He is consistent and never functions contrary to His own nature. Ask God to communicate fuller revelations of His perfections and excellencies to us that we may trust and boast in His name.
“Some trust in and boast of chariots and some of horses, but we will trust in and boast of the name of the Lord our God” (Ps. 20:7, AMP).
Monday, December 21 – Beseech the Lord to teach us His ways and to unite our hearts to solely fear His name. Ask Him to renew a reverence for His name in the church of North America. “Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name” (Ps. 86:11, NASB).
Tuesday, December 22 – Beg God to revive our hearts and give us as much concern for His glory as He has for it. Ask Him to help our hearts know, esteem, and declare His excellencies. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation . . . that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Pet. 2:9, NIV).
Wednesday, December 23 – Implore God to revive us that we may call upon His name. Ask Him to help us be more conformed to His character by allowing us to truly know Him. “Then will we not depart from You; revive us (give us life) and we will call upon Your name” (Ps. 80:18, AMP).
